PHOENIX (AZFamily)—Waymo, the autonomous rideshare program, is expanding its reach in the Valley to include parts of north Scottsdale, north Phoenix, Mesa, and Ahwatukee.

Phoenix has been home to the largest fleet of autonomous vehicles in the United States since Waymo started operations in the Valley in 2022.

The company now services rides into north Phoenix as far as Desert Ridge. Riders can use Waymo farther northeast to areas including the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, downtown Mesa, and an additional 90 square-miles in Phoenix, including Desert Ridge.

“Metro Phoenix holds a special place in Waymo’s history and our hearts,” Waymo Chief Product Officer Saswat Panigrahi said. “It’s a privilege to continue serving Phoenicians and visitors alike, and our team is excited to offer access to even more popular destinations across The Valley.”

Waymo employees currently have 24-hour access to the curbside terminal pick-up and drop-off locations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport as part of a pilot program with the city. The company hopes to expand this option to public customers soon.

Riders can now travel to the Talking Stick Entertainment District, including the resort, TopGolf, and other attractions in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This marks the first native american tribe to host autonomous vehicles in the United States.

“This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our commitment to innovation and sustainable solutions. Waymo’s proven track record in developing and deploying autonomous technologies gives us confidence that this initiative will revolutionize the way people travel within our city, enhancing accessibility, safety, and efficiency for residents and visitors alike,” Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Martin Harvier said.

Waymo has not just new locations in store. Riders will also have some new tech to check out. Riders will have new music options available, redesigned in-car screens, and the ability to share their ride details with friends or family.

“We’re not only focused on giving our riders more places to ride. We’re also continually listening to our riders and finding ways to make the in-car experience safer and more comfortable,” Panigrahi said.
