John Lewis Kai, a 53-year-old alleged dog breeder, has been arrested in Arizona after multiple dead and starving dogs were found in converted apartments. The officers and Humane Society staff found feces and urine throughout the two units, with nine underweight dogs rescued. The tenants, who live in the converted home, claimed Kai was their landlord and had been breeding and selling the dogs. Kai was taken into custody on 16 counts of animal cruelty, including one related to killing an animal. If released, Kai will be barred from having contact with animals while the case is pending. The animals are now in the care of the Humane Society.
