Otay Mesa Detention Center Death: San Diego ICE Facility

A detainee died at San Diego's Otay Mesa ICE facility this weekend. It's the 30th ICE-custody death reported nationwide this year. A person in immigration custody died at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, according to private prison company CoreCivic, which operates the facility. The death, confirmed by email, adds to the number of people who have died while held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this year. The private prison firm has not released the detainee's identity, gender, or nationality, and has directed further questions to ICE. The facility, which was bought from CoreCiviv by the federal government for $739.2 million in July, holds over 1,000 immigrants a day. A San Diego County inspection in August found that conditions at Otay mes generally met state standards, but faulted the facility for failing to disclose two suspected tuberculosis cases for several weeks.
