Supervisors call for answers about death at Otay Mesa Detention Center

The county Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy on the detainee Monday, according to the supervisors. A cause of death has yet to be released. San Diego officials have expressed concern over the death of an immigrant detainee at Otay Mesa Detention Center, which they believe is part of a trend of increasing deaths in ICE custody. The private-prison company that runs the facility, CoreCivic, found an unresponsive detainee and pronounced him dead shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The company released no further information about the person or the circumstances of the death. County Supervisors Paloma Aguirre and Terra Lawson-Remer have called on the Trump administration and CoreCive to cooperate with county investigators and clear the way for ongoing inspections at the Otay mesa center. They also demanded that the federal government and Corecive take steps to ensure basic human rights, medical oversight and safety within their borders.
