A man died and another was injured seriously Monday in a three-vehicle crash in Chandler, police said.

The collision occurred about 1:20 a.m. May 29 on Dobson Road just north of Ray Road when police said a Dodge Avenger driven by Jorrell Yazzie, 29, of Mesa, was headed north when it struck the rear of another vehicle.

The second vehicle was a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Maurice Owens, 43, of Chandler, according to authorities.

“The impact from this collision sent the second vehicle spinning into the southbound lanes of Dobson Road, where it collided with the third vehicle,” a 2018 Toyota Camry, driven by Chandler resident Chon Tran, 68, police said in a release.

Owens sustained life-threatening injuries, including numerous broken bones and lacerations. He is at a hospital in serious condition, police said.

Tran was taken in critical condition to a hospital where she died, police said.

“Yazzie is suspected of impairment, and investigators believe speed was a factor in the initial accident,” the release stated.

He was treated for minor injuries and then booked into jail, with charges submitted against him for manslaughter and aggravated assault.
