MESA, Ariz. (AP) — A suspect has been arrested in connection with five separate shootings in metro Phoenix that left four people dead and a woman wounded, authorities said Sunday.

Irene Byers, 20, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder, Mesa police said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known, but police said Byers claimed responsibility for the shooting and told officers where to find clothing and weapons used in the crime.

Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing clothing that witnesses reported at several scenes of the shooting.

The names of the dead were being withheld on Sunday until next of kin were notified. It was unclear Sunday whether Byers has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police said officers were dispatched to Mesa Park around 10:30 p.m. Friday and found a 41-year-old man dead at the scene.

While still in the park, police reported hearing gunshots nearby and searched the area, later finding a 36-year-old woman with serious injuries. He remains in stable condition in hospital.

Police said they received a call about a body near the Mesa bus station around 1 a.m. Sunday.

They said officers found a 41-year-old man dead at the scene, and then a second man dead just after 2 a.m.

According to the authorities, all the victims had gunshot wounds. They also said shell casings recovered from shooting scenes were linked to the same 9mm handgun used in a fatal shooting in Phoenix on Friday afternoon.

Details of the Phoenix shooting have not yet been released.
