Christopher Speller was brilliant in the Colorado Mesa men’s basketball team’s run to the Sweet 16.

Speller announced on the social media site X on Tuesday night that he’s entering the transfer portal, the same day coach Mike DeGeorge resigned to become the coach at Division I Cal Poly and one day after fellow teammate — and RMAC player of the year — Trevor Baskin opted to hit the portal.

Speller has one year of eligibility left. He averaged 13.5 points per game in the Mavericks’ six postseason games with a high of 18 points in the Sweet 16 loss to West Texas A&M. He also had nine assists in the first round of the South Central Regional and seven in the second round.

Speller was selected the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year in the 2020-21 season and was a two-time All-RMAC honorable mention.

He and his brother, Christian, both came to the Mavericks by way of Rangeview High School in Denver.

Colorado Mesa junior Myah Arrieta was selected as both the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National and RMAC Player of the Week for her performance last weekend.

The Central High School graduate hit eight home runs and went 13 for 16, good for an .812 batting average, during the Mavs’ series sweep of Black Hills State University. Arrieta also had a double, scored 11 runs and had 14 RBI throughout the series.

She was also the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week on March 7 of 2023 and becomes only the second Maverick in program history (AnnMarie Torres — 2019 and 2022) to receive the award twice. Brooke Hodgson (2018) and Ellie Smith (2021) are the program’s other recipients.

CMU’s Robert Sharrar was the RMAC player of the week for the second straight week.

Sharrar has been on an absolute torrid pace for the past three weeks and he just added to it in the series with Colorado Christian. He batted .647 (11 for 17) with four doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He added two stolen bases, seven RBI, seven runs scored and an OPS over 2.000 to help the Mavericks to the four-game series sweep of Colorado Christian.

The Mavericks will be back on the diamond beginning today in Denver as they take on Regis in a four-game series.

It’s time to take Colorado Mesa seriously.

Dillon Pless scored his second goal of the game to clinch the win over the Griffins (5-2, 1-1 RMAC). He also had three goals against Florida Southern (6-2).
