GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Over the past almost 35 years, Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County has helped countless families find their way into being homeowners.

Today, the organization dedicated their 90th home, and along the way, Executive Director Laurel Cole has seen people’s lives change, and today’s recipient, retired massage therapist Deb Borrell, is more than deserving.

“It’s kind of indescribable to see people who have worked so hard be able to get keys to their very own home,” said Cole. “They don’t have to worry about where they’re going to be living everything is going to be safe and stable. they know their neighbors because they’ve worked together building homes, and it’s really just a very heartwarming experience.”

It takes a while for some applicants to have their homes, but for Borrell, everything came together perfectly, and her house was ready to move into in less time than usual.

“For her, it’s been just under a year,” said Cole. “Some of our homeowners it takes a little bit longer, it just kind of depends on how many homes we’re able to build, if there’s any delays. Right now we say about 12-16 months on average, we’re trying to get it closer to that 12 month range, but she’s been one of our quickest.”

Borrell’s dedication to helping others shows with the size of the crowd that showed up to see her dedication today, and there was a lot of tears shared from Borrell’s family, as well as fellow volunteers who work hand-in-hand with Borrell as she helps build houses around the valley.
