Arizona storm damage costs pale in comparison to Gulf and Midwest states, but one 2010 storm stands out
Severe storms can happen almost anywhere in the United States, but when it comes to damage costs, Arizona and other western states are in a different category than Gulf Coast and Midwest states. Arizona's storm damage costs are significantly lower than those of Gulf and Midwest states, according to data from Climate Central. The data, which tracks weather disasters and estimates damages, reveals that Arizona has seen only two weather events since 1980 that caused over $1 billion in inflation-adjusted damage, compared to Texas, Illinois, and Missouri. Over the past 40 years, Arizona's storm damages have ranged from $5 billion to $10 billion in total inflation-adjust dollars. However, Texas has incurred between $100 billion and $200 billion in storm damage. A single storm in 2010, which caused $5 million in inflation, accounted for over half of all major weather-related disaster costs in Arizona's history.
