Samantha Mesa has departed from WOI-TV's Local 5 News in Des Moines.

The "Good Morning Iowa" and "Midday" anchor and reporter made her final appearance May 24, just before the Memorial Day weekend. She hasn't announced what will come next, but said she is excited to continue on her media career path.

Here's everything to know about Mesa.

Mesa started her career with Local 5 News three years ago near the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a Facebook posting, she said she had to be creative to learn about the community during the period of quarantines and maintaining social distance.

"To the colleagues of mine at Local 5 News that extended kindness and collaboration to me — and with me — thank you from the depths of my heart," she said. "You are truly beautiful difference makers. Combining our talents and passion to present the news with you was a joy… something I’ll always remember and be grateful for."

She said that over her time with "Midday," she has interviewed more than 250 people. She joined the "Good Morning Iowa" team in 2022. Before that, she co-hosted the station's nightly newscast.

"I will carry our conversations and visions for bettering our world with me forever," Mesa said on Facebook. "You’ve fueled me to keep making a difference through storytelling in the most beautiful way."

Where did Mesa start her career in journalism?

The Colorado native joined Local 5 from KVEO-TV CBS 4 Valley in Harlingen, Texas, on the border with Mexico. She worked there as a morning and midday anchor and reporter. She also has worked as a reporter at 13 WHAM-TV in Rochester, New York, and as a breaking news morning reporter and anchor at KRIS News in Corpus Christi, Texas.

"Working in Central Iowa showed me the power of community and believing in hope, looking for solutions and having FUN in a way that’s been next level for my 10 years in journalism across the country," Mesa said on Facebook.

She graduated from the University of Colorado with honors in communication and political science. She earned her master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

When did Samantha Mesa say she would leave Local 5 News?

Mesa announced her final day at Local 5 News on May 12.

"To every person who carved out time in your day to collaborate with me, THANK YOU," she said. "You are what made this experience so meaningful. I could never anticipate how much love and positive progress we accomplished for Iowa’s communities."
