Mesa marks 20 years of Dia de los Muertos with weekend festival
Mesa's 20th annual Dia de los Muertos festival hits the streets this weekend, continuing a cherished celebration two decades in the making. Mesa's 20th annual Día de los Muertos festival is set to begin at noon on Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center. The festival, which is rooted in family ties, celebrates the memory of loved ones who have died with music, food, and memories. The heart of the observance is a giant community altar, where mourners place offerings of photos and food. Kochitl Carry Avila, a Tucson-based artist, and a crew of volunteers spent days building the ceremonial altar. The official holiday of Día De los MuERTos is the first weekend in November. The Arts Center's celebration is described as one of the nation's biggest.
