The Rams were expected to join a handful of other top teams in the Southern Section to opt out of competing in the CIF State regional playoffs. Coach Antonio Romero had his players vote whether or not to keep playing.

Lilly Hauser’s did not hesitate in voting yes.

Hauser, a sophomore pitcher, had a rough outing in the circle during that 13-1 loss to Orange Lutheran.

“I did not want that game to be my final memory for this season,” Hauser said. “That’s why I voted yes.”

Hauser has bounced back in a big way. In Tuesday’s Division I regional opener, she tossed a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and hit a three-run home run to lift the Rams to a 3-0 victory over Mater Dei. Friday, she threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 4 for 4 with another home run to lead Murrieta Mesa to a 6-3 win over Southwestern League rival Great Oak in a regional semifinal game.

Murrieta Mesa (27-4) hosts Del Norte (25-6) for the Division I regional title Saturday at 4 p.m.

“She so competitive, and it’s great to see her come back and pitch well,” Romero said of Hauser.

Hauser (22-1) allowed only one run in the two games she pitched against Great Oak in the regular season. The Wolfpack matched that total in the opening inning Friday afternoon. Samantha Young walked to lead off the game, moved to second on a ground out and scored the game’s first run on an error.

Murrieta Mesa answered back immediately. The Rams loaded the bases with no outs following a walk to Danica Hobbs, a bunt single by Hauser and another walk to Victoria Prado. Murrieta Mesa took a 2-1 advantage when Hobbs and Hauser scored on Macy Clark’s one-out single through the middle.

Hauser added to that lead with her ninth home run of the season, a towering shot to center field leading off the third inning.

“I get jittery in the box sometimes, so I was just trying to stay on top of the ball,” Hauser said.

Great Oak pitcher Miali Guachino worked out of a bases-loaded jam later in the inning, recording three straight strikeouts to end the threat. But Murrieta Mesa wasn’t done. Hauser singled home a run in the fourth inning, and Kenzie Farrier made it a 5-1 lead for the Rams later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Hauser ran into some trouble in the fifth inning, as Great Oak (16-11-1) had runners on second and third with one out. Jocelyn James scored on an error, and Guachino’s RBI double trimmed the deficit to 5-3.

Murrieta Mesa added an insurance run in the sixth. Hauser continued her impressive effort at the plate with a single and scored her third run when Farrier lined a long single off of the fence in left field.

Hauser also showed her all-around athleticism by stealing two bases Friday. She rarely runs the bases when pitching because softball rules allow for courtesy runners for pitchers and catchers.

“Baserunning is one of my favorite things to do, so I had so much fun out there today,” Hauser said.

The Rams were missing three of its top offensive players because of travel ball commitments but still managed to manufacture six runs and record seven hits against one of the nation’s top pitchers.

“Our girls that are playing right now have had some success against (Guachino) this season,” Romero said. “We just needed to put some things together today and give Lilly a comfortable lead to work with.”

Guachino, a senior headed to Ole Miss, registered 12 strikeouts in her final game for Great Oak.
