Municipal engineers ‘Walk and Roll’ downtown

Outfitted with a mix of wheelchairs, vision-impairing glasses and noise-canceling headphones, a crowd of engineering, inspecting and planning professionals wound their way through Grand Junction’s downtown area earlier this month, Municipal engineers from Grand Junction, Fruita and Mesa County employees participated in a “Walk and Roll” workshop in which they were given a perspective on the city’s accessibility to people with disabilities. The event, which included participants wearing wheelchairs, vision-impairing glasses, and noise-canceling headphones, participants swapped between devices and used white canes to navigate the sidewalk. The participants were able to navigate through Grand Junction’ downtown area in a loop that included City Hall, Grand and Rood avenues, Fifth, Seventh and Main streets. The workshop was led by Grand Junction Engineering and Transportation Director Trent Prall, who found the difficulty of transitioning from street level to the sidewalk difficult for amateur wheelchair users. Prall also highlighted the difficulty in transitioning from the street level onto the sidewalk, noting that even modern crossing ramps were often a challenge for amateur users.
