On Monday, the governing board for Mesa Public Schools approved a $242,000 contract to purchase a wellness app for district employees. The app is offered by the company Grokker.

Before the vote, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Justin Wing said the wellness app offers things like team fitness and nutrition challenges that the district’s health care app through Cigna does not.

“There is a sense of camaraderie and connectedness," he said. "The intent is to be engaged. The Cigna one, although I check it every once in a while for my balance for my HSA account or whatever, is not an engaging [tool]. It’s just a resource, like Googling something is a resource.”

The district is using money from an employee benefits trust for the app, so it’s not pulling from funding that could be used for students. Additionally, the funds will provide related wellness coaching and consulting services to support the district’s wellness coordinator.

Wing said they're also hoping that by offering this resource as a preventative measure, it will reduce health care costs for the future.
