Review: ‘The Outsiders’ fights to hold viewers’ interest in Costa Mesa
Aside from a brilliantly choreographed rumble scene, the touring show at the Segerstrom suffers from one-dimensional villains and dim lighting. “The Outsiders," a musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton's YA novel, is set in Tulsa in 1967 and shares many similarities with "West Side Story". The show is about young street gangs battling in gritty urban environments, with similarities including a fight scene and a mixed-match flirtation between rival teens at a social gathering. However, the show's portrayal of teen angst and conflict is largely rooted in its own time and preoccupations. The story is told as a life and times reminiscence of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, who lives in desolate circumstances with two brothers, elder Darrel and Sodapop. Actor Christian Arredondo, who plays Ponyboy, is a winning presence and conveys the sensitivities built into Ponyboy's character. However the production is criticized for its technical execution and lack of attention to the novel's description.
