Keeping Flagstaff’s skies dark for 25 years

For 25 years, Flagstaff has worked to keep its night skies clear enough for people to see the stars, planets and other celestial wonders, even from downtown. Flagstaff, Arizona, has been designated the world's first International Dark Sky City in 2001 for its efforts to reduce light pollution and protect views of the night sky for 25 years. The city's efforts include setting up telescopes backstage for Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant to view Saturn and the nearly full moon. The Arizona Department of Transportation replaced over 370 highway light fixtures with amber LEDs earlier this year, marking the first deployment of amber LED lighting on interstate highways in the United States. The Flagstaff Dark Sky Coalition also shares ways to reduce lighting pollution at home, helping preserve the night's night sky. The celebration of the city's designation will coincide with International DarkSky Week.
