Why a notorious Phoenix murder still raises questions 95 years later
Oct. 16 is the 95th anniversary of one of Phoenix's oldest and most notorious murders. The "Trunk Murders" in 1931, which occurred in Phoenix, are still raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the murders of Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvig "Sammy" Samuelson. The women were fatally shot and then shoved into a metal trunk and several suitcases, taken to California by Winnie Ruth Judd. Although Judd was the only one ever tried for the murder, many are skeptical about whether she acted alone. The three women knew each other from a local X-ray clinic in Phoenix and shared intimate secrets. Some believe that Judd's affair with wealthy lumber businessman Jack Halloran led to a fight after it was revealed that Samuelsen introduced Halloran to a woman rumored to have syphilis. However, a confession written by Judd in 1933 stated that she shot them both with no accomplice.
