What are data centers, and why are Arizona neighbors pushing back?
As data centers multiply across Arizona, residents are turning out in force to say the projects do not belong in their neighborhoods. The number of data centers in Arizona is increasing, with over 100 currently online and another 50 planned. As the facilities become more visible, opposition has increased from Glendale to Flagstaff. Dr. Kevin Hamlen, a professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Dallas, described a data center as a large warehouse or building that stores computing infrastructure, servers, and data storage areas. He said the growing number of centers is mainly about efficiency, with a cost, benefit reward for centralizing all of the storage and computation. Hamlen suggested that companies are assuming centralizing computing is more efficient, but there has been insufficient research to confirm this.
